A thief. The assassin she stole from. And the demonic plot that will kill her, unless he helps her.

It should have been an easy task...

Verity Hastings has a little trick; she can find anything, no matter where it's hidden. It's a skill that's kept her safe and fed all the way from the orphanages and workhouses of her youth. But when she steals a mysterious item for a masked man, she knows the con is on her this time.

In order to protect herself from his associates, she can turn to only one person Adrian Bishop, the sorcerer she stole the relic from.

Scarred recluse, Adrian Bishop, is rarely surprised anymore. But when a rather enticing little handful turns up on his doorstep claiming to be his mysterious thief, he doesn't know what to think. He needs the relic back, no matter the cost, and he's not above using Verity to find it. But as Verity begins to sneak under his guard, for the first time in years there's a ray of light in his dark world. Hexbound The Dark Arts Book 2 eBook Bec McMaster

Everything I love about Hexbound is exactly what I struggled with in Shadowbound. I struggled with the very detailed and intense world-building in book one. Now that the hard part is over, I love, love, the society created by Bec McMasters.

Magic users are in a tenuous position in the land. The Queen allow magic to exist because they provide a valuable service to her government. However, there is a growing anti-magic element gaining popularity seeking to rid their world of this “abomination.”

Meanwhile there is a power struggle within the magical world as well revolving around the Prime, the leader of the magical realm. It involves his sons, the three spiritual objects of enormous power, and a villain very close to the family. Hexbound features the story of the second son, Adrian Bishop. Adrian belongs to an elite group of assassins who work directly for the Prime. Although, he knows he has an affinity for the role, it steals a little of his soul each time he completes an assignment. Verity Hastings grows up in one the poorest parts of surviving with a gang of criminals. Verity has a special and unique gift that makes her a highly successful thief. She is coerced into stealing one of the magical objects currently being protected by Adrian.

The overarching storyline is so wonderfully creative. The narrative is layered, nuanced and wonderfully complicated. By focusing the main storyline around a singular family, each book weaves another part of the narrative together, connecting it seamlessly with the last. I find myself completely invested in the characters and look forward to the next moment I could read another chapter. It’s a page turner.

Hexbound The Dark Arts Book 2 eBook Bec McMaster Reviews

I enjoyed this story and the play between the lightness of Verity and the darkness in Bishop. They had their fair share of adventure and certainly slaked my thirst for magic use. Verity has a unique power, which saved them on numerous occasions. The book ends on a cliffhanger - can't wait to read the next installment.
So this focused on another brother, Adrian, and the woman who is his match, Verity. I enjoyed the way it started up immediately in the first few pages, and kept you hoping for the good guys throughout the book. Great sorcery battles, good sex scenes , and a twisted ending that makes you want to get the 3rd book asap! The only drawback is that the heroine is only 19 and it is hard for me to relate to someone so young, but she carried herself well and you could forget her age. Can't wait for book 3
Great series..I just started reading McMasters books a month ago and have read them all. Now I have to wait for the next book in this series and another series by her. You know what it's like to pick up a previously unread author and get so engrossed in the story, characters ,action and romance that you can't stop. You jump right to the next book and before you know it you have read everything that author has written. That's what reading Bec McMasters is like. I have not been disappointed in any of her books..
This is my second time reading Hexbound - I decided before diving into Book 3 of the Dark Arts I wanted to refresh myself in the first two books. The whole series is amazing - the overarching plot still leaves you wondering what the final outcome might be. Adrian and Verity are well thought out characters. Adrian is no longer the dark assassin - he has depth and his story makes your heart hurt. Verity is a spunky, independent lady who tries to make the most out of what life has handed her. I like that the story continues to bring in past characters while building upon others. Looking forward to the final book in the series to see how it all comes together.
McMasters writes fabulous historical urban fantasy romance and I love the Dark Arts series. I world building is good. It has like able characters, and very hot sexy scenes. The ending for me seemed rushed to jump into book three. The entire cast of characters from the first book are all represented, plus a few new. The author set up the character of Mercy as pivotal to Verity, but then she disappeared into the background.
The connection between Verity and Bishop was not on the same visceral level of Ianthe and Lucien, which was a disappointment. Normally McMasters coupling of her characters are spot on, but this one seemed to easy, to quick with the I love you.
In all this isn’t McMasters best book, but it is a good book.
The Dark Arts series is masterfully told. Hexbound is a delight to read. As is Soulbound, Book 1. Everything we have come to love in Bec McMaster's vivid worlds. Exciting, frightening, extraordinary and of course, spellbinding! Full of wit, intelligence and very heart wrenching at times, the action is fast paced and will leave you breathless. The perfectly simmering romance with chemistry beyond the control of her characters is at once provocative and only lends depth to the story. And as a prophecy plays out which promises to result in ruin and death, the players each have their own fatal flaws and astounding strengths as their lives are turned upside down, new bonds are formed, and the ultimate enemy rears it head to destroy them all. Magnificent and utterly satisfying!
Damitdamitdamit!

I was NOT looking for another BecMcMaster series… didn't want one. In fact, I had book one long before I read it and then it was too late.

I almost knew where this one was headed. Almost. Alas, she kept twisting the tail and things continued to change and for a better plot than I expected.

Now about the book Sorcery? Lots. Suspense? Yep. Twists? Definitely. Steamy scenes? Oh yeah, HOT. In fact if you're turned off by explicit scenes, be prepared to skip some pages. Relax, it isn't porno but it is very descriptive. Did you notice I didn't say to skip the book? Of course if you read book one first, you know what to expect.

You want more about the book? Buy it; read it. At the very least, download a sample but really, don't waste your time. Just get the full book to start - after all, it's Bec McMaster… you can't go wrong.
